contemporary dance presentation in viljandi. why?

contemporary dance is for a long time not an unusual quest on stages of performing arts. you can notice it more and more often in different expressions of performing-arts culture: in drama, performance-art, just as well as in video-media etc., etc. for example, many composers create their brand new music that is made to order by innovative dance groups. all this proves that contemporary dance is one of the culture phenomena that stand strongly in the frontline of innovative ideas, ideas which positive influence on us (in many ways) we simply can’t ignore.

unfortunately the situation in estonia is a bit different. contemporary dance over here is mainly concentrated in our capital tallinn. that is where most of the choreographers, artists and performers live and work. also, that’s the place where exists the only capable managing organisation of our country (2. tants and kanuti gildi SAAL). tallinn is neither lack of deeply interested audience that has seen (and through that also been able to educate themselves) local productions as well as contemporary dance hits from abroad. we are happy about them but the same time it’s also a bit sad tendency for the rest of estonia. we unfortunately haven’t had the chance to brag with that well-educated audience, experienced organisers…

…until now. noore tantsu festival in co-operation with 2. tants and estonian creative dancers union have started to break the ice by bringing contemporary dance to viljandi. the project is called kaasaegse tantsu lava viljandis (= contemporary dance presentation in viljandi). so far noore tantsu festival has done good work by hosting productions from estonia and abroad in the festival’s schedule. but from now on we would like to bring such pieces here more often and regularly. also, we would like to introduce to our audience the possibility to see one production of contemporary dance per one night which may lead to an entirely different experience of seeing contemporary dance.

viljandi is a town with one university (viljandi culture academy) that offers higher education in dance and theatre, here are about half a dozen dance studios for youngsters, here exists audience that has a bit higher expectations about theatre than traditionally…it’s not a bad ground to start from, is it?
