A PEEK INTO THE WEEKEND
VOCAL IMPROVISATION
July 11 morning and afternoon sessions

July 12 morning session
10am-1pm
Vocal improvisation may seem like (and be) a sophisticated practice, yet it is accessible to anyone with a voice. It is also the perfect playground for exploring the many facets of our identity. It may be a way of approaching our relationship with time and the environment, our relationship with others, our position within a group, and our personal discourse.
Passionate about musical adventures off the beaten track, Lembe Lokk will share her approach to the voice as an instrument during this workshop. She will use a variety of techniques to develop physical and vocal awareness. We will explore registers, colors, and vocal intentions, beyond the characteristics associated with style. We will experiment to explore the musicality of everyday language and invent imaginary languages, improvise with words, and vocally apprehend textual and poetic works. Soundpainting tools may be used to collectively construct musical sequences.
The workshop evolves also with what the group offers, as improvisation is the art of listening and living in the present moment.
Lembe Lokk is a singer, musician, actress, performer and poet. She lives in France.
She began her career in jazz and improvised music and studied extensive voice techniques with multiple artists. Her artistic work is marked by a long collaboration with the choreographic theater of Pantheatre-Roy Hart, but also by her encounter with Anne Bogart of City Company, NY, and the practice of physical theater.
She writes poetry, composes, creates and collaborates on various music, theater and multidisciplinary performance projects.
She likes to question the body, the heart, identity, the present moment, and the connections between them all.
The concert program includes Lembe Lokk's own French-language compositions as well as gems from the most exciting and best French songwriters (Gainsbourg, Brel, Bashung, Barbara, etc.). Of course, the concert will also feature stories from life, which Lembe loves to spice up her concerts with her characteristic humor.
Lembe Lokk, who discovered and learned French in Estonia, has said that he acquired his spoken French by listening to French love songs, which gave him the idea to create a small tribute to this genre.
It was primarily her love of the French language that led her to move to France years ago, a language that seemed to stick with her and open up new meanings. To date, Lembe Lokk has published several poetry collections in French, performed in theater productions, and recorded albums. Lembe Lokk's work is very unique, combining baroque music, French chansons, and sounds inspired by nature.
Lembe Lokk will give an exclusive concert at the Notafe Festival on July 10 with a program entitled "A demain, mon amour!" or "See you tomorrow, my love!" She will be accompanied by the exceptional and coulourful French bass guitarist François Puyalto.
